Got a second mortgage through them about 2 years ago. The contract states it can be paid down to $0 with no penalty but if I write and request the account be closed before 36 months I have to pay the closing cost of the original loan. Totally understandable.

I have the loan all but paid down to $0. This month I get a statement says principal is $2.39 and payment due is $202.65. I call to find out WTF? First lady I got had no idea shuffled me to someone else who shuffled me back then cut me off. Second call was an India dude I couldn't understand and I got cut off when he put me on hold. Third call the gal was nice and spoke good english. She puts me on hold, talks to her supervisor who suggested that I shouldn't have paid extra on the loan so I could keep making payments for another year because now that it's almost paid off I owe the closing cost. I quoted their contract to them and they said that's just the way it works. I called bs and they said I still owed this months payment. I hung up and called their Fair Lending Hotline and got a person (from India). She put me on hold while checking my account for over 30 minutes! Unacceptable! I hung up and called back got another guy (from India). I explained to him what was going on and how unhappy I was with their customer service, told him that I would never do business with Citi again. He was very nice and agree with me and the contract that there is no penalty and I do not owe closing costs or a payment. I can pay the $2 principle anytime down to $0 without any penalty. I hope he wasn't just agreeing to shut me up becasue that's how it felt. Either way, I guess we will see if the account is delinquent after the 15 day period after the payment due date wether or not he was lieing to me!

Don't bother using their email contact either. I did twice and both responses had nothing to do with what I was asking. They were automated.

I don't know where to begin. Hidden fees like you can't believe (on existing mortgage). You have to pay to ask questions about your own account!

Rude: times 10. On-time payments posted late. They also have a giant junk mail machine that crushes you with junk mail once you are in their system. For credit security reasons I asked them to stop the multiple unsolicited credit offers via mail. That was a laughable request. The people on the other end say yes sir, yes sir, yes sir ? but NOTING changes. I feel like the loan servicing company in India does not really communicate with the US offices at all. They just try to sell you additional products.

My credit is perfect so I am not a sour grapes person. I simply cannot believe how a company like this can stay in business. I would not do ANY business with them in the future - I don't care how low their rates are. I am now working with a small, local bank and the difference is like night an day. AND, the people on the other end of the phone speak English as a first language.

God help anyone that uses CitiMortgage.

After the worst service imaginable, and ton?s of problems with them, they THEN try to sell me insurance, credit monitoring, and a credit card - unbelievable.
Any Advice?

First off, I'll just say we were probably stupid thinking we could handle buying a house. We bought in 9/05 and currently pay over $2,200 per month on our two loans (one to cover closing, etc.). Our first one is at 6.625% and the second is at 8%. In addition, we pay PMI. We've never been late on a payment (beyond the 16th of the month that they give you) and our loans are fixed. Our credit is good - somewhere in the low to mid 700s. There seems to be no help for people in our situation. We are tempted to just let it go into foreclosure and move the heck out of here. This payment kills us and gives us no breathing room at all. We've had offers to refi but I looked into one once that would've saved about $118 per month and we'd have to pay something like $4500 to process it. Doesn't sound like a deal to me. Does anyone know if I have any recourse or leverage with our lender, CitiMortgage? I mean, they wouldn't want us to walk away and be stuck with the house right?

Thanks for reading. We really just wanted to live the American Dream and I think we got short-changed. I could just kick myself!! Any advice would truly be appreciated.

In the 4 years I have had the miserable experience of dealing with Citi group of companies I have had many problems with them. The current situation takes the cake. Wanting to lock in on lower rates, and move away from Citi, I went thru a mortgage broker to refinance. Unfortunately I was placed back with Citi. So - refinanced from CitiMortgage to CitiMortgage. Nothing complex - no money in, no money out - straight refinance.

Citi, in their own very special clerically careless way applied to payoff to the *new* loan instead of the old loan, which has caused a domino effect I'm still living with. Even though I've paid May08 and Jun08 pay'ts on time, I was told I was late in May, and now I'm being told I still owe them a June payt. In actuality, since they made the mistake, I've overpaid by $52.00 in June, but they are insisting I owe them $566.12 over and above what I've already paid. Since, on their online site, you can't actually logon to your closed loan at all, and can't see any detail on the new loan, I can't see what they have done, and no one will explain it to me in a manner that allows me to understand why they think I owe them more money! If they hadn't made the mistake, I would have made total payments of $1655.12 in June. Instead, due to circumstances, and based on their advice, I paid $1697.12 - $52 extra. Now, because they made a mistake, they think I should pay a total of $2221.24. How does that add up' When I explained I didn't understand where my money had gone, I was assured that the problem was fixed, but I still owed them money.
As far as I can understand, they applied the June pay't to the old loan, kept the escrow ($566.12) on the old account, refunded me $1088.50, and then *transfered* the escrow to the new loan, thus shorting me by the $566.12 - so now, I'm going to have to pay $566.12 (plus the amount they've refunded me) for June *again*. I'm furious, and can't get anyone there to listen. Customer service is a fortress - they won't let you talk to one person, they don't return phone calls, and the one time I did get someone to give me their name and phone#, when I called back, the phone # was wrong, and no one knew who that person was at the 800# for customer service - so apparantly I was given false name/number. (Stunning.)
This is a brief description of the problems I've had - there has been tons of compounding errors on Citi's part, that is making this harder and harder to get fixed *properly*. Citi does not care at all about their customer. I asked for compenstaion for the 8 hours of time I have spend *so far* on this problem - nothing. I asked if I get interest paid on the overpayment I made - no, I don't. Yet they will gouge me for every red cent they can.
Contacted my mortgage broker today out of desperation - I need help to get out of this mess that Citi has made. He was stunned that Citi could possibly have paid off the new loan instead of the old loan.

What a mess. I will no longer deal with this company. I will cease using my Citi M/C, and and will refinance this mortgage with someone else as soon as I am able.

There are 2 forms of bad faith that you should all know about before dealing with Citi-roup, Mortgage or Bank.
Here are the 2 new depths of poor behavior that they have stooped to.
#1. Payment amount changed on fixed rate mortgages. Citi has seen fit to raise untold number of monthly mortgage payments on fixed rate mortgages to increase the escrow impound account amount balance at the end of the year. Its an interest free loan. It was about $90, now it is $350. This limit is set by congress approved index. It does not matter if your taxes or insurance have changed. Citi wants more money in the impound account at the end of the year because if you default on your mortgage or your home is a short sale, they keep the escrow account. They will not relent on such an unethical tactic. They even said in the letter that they did not care if your taxes and insurance did not go up they wanted the maximum index amount there. That is reason 1 why they suck.

#2. I recently listed and sold a home for a client on a short sale. (Bank took less on a sale then owed on the mortgage). It was a VA backed loan so Citi got extra money from the government to cover the short fall. By the way, Vets have to payback the difference to the government to ever be able to use a VA loan again. Nice way to treat our Vets. Citi agreed to pay the last half 2007 taxes totaling $609 dollars. They kept saying that their system said it was paid. Up to the close of escrow it was never received by the assessors? office. To close escrow, I, the agent, paid the taxes for my client and when Citi's payment arrives, if ever, it will be returned to Citi and they will pocket the money as none can be returned to the Seller. Needless to say it will not be returned to me even though I paid it. After talking with 4 supervisors from the 4 different departments for 2 hours, I was told that there is no other person to escalate this to as there is no-one above the 4 headed hydra of these 4 supervisors. Citi group as mastered the art of lying and misdirection to such a degree that they could not find their butts if both of their hands were cuffed behind their back. They will endlessly refer you to another department so they can show that they are transferring the call and then they hang up. As a company they lack the ethics and integrity that one should expect from a financial institution. I will be forwarding this letter to the address of the CEO that was so generously provided in another blog. I will also send it along to the FTC. Customer service is not a term that Citi-Group should utter in the same breath with their company name. It is a true oxymoron. If you email me I will provide you with all of the names of the players at Citi Group that participated in this fraud. They may not be bad people; they are just conspirators in Citi Groups poor business policies. The rating of one is because there is nothing lower.
